Daniel Meron accuses UNHRC of betraying victims of Iran’s regime by allowing its foreign minister to speak.

Israel’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva has “vehemently objected” to Iran’s address at the UN Human Rights Council, describing it as a “blatant betrayal” of victims of the Iranian regime.

In a letter to council president Jurg Lauber seen by Reuters, Daniel Meron said, “Affording the Iranian foreign minister the floor before this body continues to undermine the council’s credibility.”

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to speak before holding talks with the EU foreign policy chief and counterparts from Britain, France, and Germany aimed at de-escalating the Israel-Iran conflict.

Meron accused Tehran of using the council to “promote the regime’s despotic campaign.”

On Wednesday, Iran’s UN ambassador labelled Israeli strikes an act of “war against humanity.”

UNHRC rules permit exceptional addresses from senior officials. Araghchi was granted permission accordingly.

Tensions escalated after Israel launched strikes last Friday, citing nuclear threat concerns. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks, maintaining its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.
