Israeli Forces open fire in Gaza, killing civilians returning home

Israeli forces killed at least five Palestinians in Gaza, threatening a fragile ceasefire as leaders pledged reconstruction efforts and global reactions grew divided.

At least five Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in Gaza City’s Shujayea neighbourhood on Tuesday, while two others were wounded in Khan Younis, amid renewed clashes that cast doubt on the durability of the newly declared ceasefire.

According to Al Jazeera, the Israeli military claimed its troops opened fire on “a number of Palestinians” who allegedly approached soldiers near the redeployment line.

Witnesses, however, said many victims were civilians returning to inspect their homes after weeks of bombardment. Gunfire was still being heard across eastern Gaza, with reports that Israeli troops fired at any movement near their positions.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced plans to coordinate with Gulf nations, the U.S., and European partners to fund Gaza’s reconstruction, urging global leaders to treat Palestinian statehood recognitions as “building blocks toward a two-state solution.”

Meanwhile, Israeli forces detained dozens in overnight West Bank raids. Former U.S. President Donald Trump maintained the ceasefire would bring “lasting peace,” but Professor Sultan Barakat dismissed his claim as “narrow and self-congratulatory.”

Rescue teams in Gaza have recovered more than 250 bodies, as UN experts warned the enclave’s recovery could “take generations.”
