An ISWAP ambush on a military convoy in northeastern Nigeria has reportedly left soldiers dead and a serving Brigade Commander abducted.
An ambush by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, terrorists has reportedly left several Nigerian soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF, dead in northeastern Nigeria, according to a report from HumAngle.
The outlet stated that the insurgents also abducted a serving Brigade Commander alongside other military personnel during the coordinated attack on a military convoy. The attackers were described as heavily armed and highly organised, targeting the convoy in what sources believe was a deliberate and well-planned strike.
If verified, this incident would mark the first time an extremist group in Nigeria has successfully captured a serving General directly from the frontline.
As of the time this report was filed, the Nigerian Army had not released an official statement regarding the number of casualties or the fate of the abducted officer.
The attack comes amid rising concerns over escalating violence in Borno State. Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, recently condemned a series of renewed terrorist assaults in his constituency, describing the situation as “deeply worrisome” and unacceptable. He disclosed that four farmers were murdered by Boko Haram insurgents while working on their farmlands in Kwam village near Dille in Askira-Uba Local Government Area.
The latest ambush adds to growing fears about deteriorating security conditions in the region.
