Goodluck Jonathan has denied reports claiming he has ruled out contesting the 2027 presidency, saying no decision has yet been made.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has denied reports that he has stepped aside from contesting the 2027 presidential election. A Newsweek Nigeria publication claimed Jonathan had decided not to run in order not to undermine Southern unity.
Responding on Friday, Jonathan’s cousin, Azibaola Robert, dismissed the report as false, stressing that the alleged aide quoted in the story “does not exist.” Writing on his verified Facebook page, Robert confirmed that Jonathan has not announced a decision either way.
“The former president has made it clear that he would not yield to calls not to run since those making such admonition had selfish motives,” Robert said. He, however, did not specify when or how Jonathan might declare his ambition.
Although Jonathan has yet to officially declare for 2027, sources suggest he has begun consultations across the country to actualize a possible second term bid.
