Former President Goodluck Jonathan is set to contest the 2027 presidential election on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, a close ally confirmed to Vanguard. The source said Jonathan aims to tackle Nigeria’s rising poverty and economic decline, with support from influential leaders who believe he stabilised the nation during his six-year tenure.

Jonathan has reportedly consulted key northern and southern stakeholders, including former military president Ibrahim Babangida. PDP leaders, backed by some governors, are actively courting him, with calls for an automatic ticket. “Many Nigerians now acknowledge his achievements and are pleading with him to return and rescue the country,” PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi said.

Legal experts remain divided on his eligibility due to a 2018 constitutional amendment limiting presidential terms. Some insist it cannot apply retroactively, while others argue it would breach the eight-year limit. PDP chieftain Bode George said Jonathan is “the easiest to sell” in 2027, citing his economic track record.
