Jose Mourinho has left Fenerbahce after one season, days after their Champions League playoff defeat to Benfica.

Jose Mourinho has stepped down as head coach of Fenerbahce after just one season, the Turkish club confirmed Friday.

The 62-year-old Portuguese manager joined the Istanbul side in 2024, guiding them to a second-place finish in the Super Lig, 11 points adrift of rivals Galatasaray. His tenure also saw quarter-final elimination in the Turkish Cup and a Europa League round-of-16 exit at the hands of Rangers.

Mourinho’s departure follows Fenerbahce’s Champions League playoff defeat to Benfica earlier this week, which consigned them to the Europa League this season. The club currently sits on four points from two league games, ahead of Sunday’s trip to Genclerbirligi.

The move comes just a day after Besiktas terminated the contract of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, signaling a turbulent week for Istanbul’s top clubs.

Mourinho leaves with a 59.7 per cent win rate from 62 matches and adds another chapter to a career that has yielded 26 trophies, including Champions League triumphs with Porto and Inter Milan.

In 2024, he declared he would be “ready to go” back to the Premier League when his time in Turkey ended.
