“We estimate that these four products alone cause between one-third and two-thirds of all global deaths,” Gilmore said

Dr. Anna Gilmore, a public health professor at the University of Bath, warns that four products—tobacco, fossil fuels, alcohol, and food—are responsible for up to two-thirds of global deaths.

“We estimate that these four products alone cause between one-third and two-thirds of all global deaths,” Gilmore said in an interview during a Barcelona health conference. She accused large corporations of manipulating products, shaping public opinion, and influencing policies to protect profits. “They blame the individual,” she noted, citing tactics like “carbon footprinting” and misleading slogans.

Gilmore emphasized that industries often operate through front groups to lobby against regulations. “They’re damaging health and society, which are avoidable,” she stated. She also warned against corporate “reputation management” strategies, which disguise harmful practices as socially responsible actions. Calling the current economic system “unsustainable,” she urged governments to regulate corporations and restructure capitalism. “Corporations are making ever-increasing profits… and using those profits to influence and control,” Gilmore concluded.
