“Troops are authorized to use force ONLY in self-defense … and deadly force is NOT authorized,” the source said.
National Guard troops have been deployed in Los Angeles under President Trump’s orders following violent protests against ICE immigration raids, TMZ reports.
A source told TMZ that troops are operating under the “standard rule for use of force,” which prioritizes de-escalation. “Troops are authorized to use force ONLY in self-defense … and deadly force is NOT authorized,” the source said.
While not permitted to arrest protestors, the National Guard can detain individuals until local police arrive to handle arrests.
Protests erupted into chaos on Sunday, marking the third consecutive day of unrest. Downtown L.A. saw several violent confrontations between demonstrators and police. Trump’s Border Czar reportedly threatened to arrest California Governor Gavin Newsom, who challenged him to follow through.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has also warned that 500 Marines may be deployed under the Insurrection Act if protests continue.
Attempts to reach the National Guard for comment have been unsuccessful.
