Lagos now imposes a ₦250,000 fine or 3-month jail term for illegal waste disposal. Monthly sanitation returns soon, and a plastic ban kicks off July 1, authorities warn.

The Lagos State Government has introduced tougher sanitation laws, with offenders now facing fines of ₦250,000 or up to three months in jail for illegal waste disposal.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Tuesday, describing the situation as “environmental lawlessness.”

“People must understand the cost of their actions,” Wahab said. “We have prosecuted over 3,000 offenders already. We are arresting, prosecuting, naming, and shaming violators.”

The government also announced that monthly environmental sanitation, suspended since 2016, will soon resume.

“We are returning to monthly sanitation. But beyond that, we must make cleanliness a daily culture,” Wahab said during visits to Idi-Araba, Orile Iganmu, and Alaba Rago.

A statewide ban on single-use plastics and Styrofoam will take effect July 1, following an 18-month transition for manufacturers.

LAWMA Managing Director Muyiwa Gbadegesin urged citizens to sort waste and avoid dumping.

“No more excuses,” Wahab added. “The government has done its part. Now it’s your turn.”
