The Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources in Lagos State, Mahmood Adegbite, has raised an alarm over the quality of borehole water consumed by residents of the Lekki area, warning that it may be contaminated by untreated waste.

Speaking during a recent stakeholders’ meeting, Adegbite stated that boreholes in Lekki are likely drawing from polluted underground sources due to poor wastewater management.

“Everyone digging borehole within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘shit water,’” he said.

He emphasized the need for urgent investment in wastewater treatment to prevent health risks.

“If we are able to treat all the waste water within this axis, which we have plans for, we should be able to also eradicate any form of disease that might result as a result of non-treatment of our waste,” he added.

Adegbite also addressed ongoing challenges with flooding in the state, attributing the recent heavy rainfall during the supposed August break to complex environmental factors.

“Basically, in terms of flooding, despite the fact that we have committed so much, however, we still need a lot to do in that space,” he said.
