Ananya Joshi, an Indian woman who spent months chronicling her job search online, has left the United States after failing to secure a new role under the F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) program.

In an emotional Instagram video posted on September 29, she thanked the US for being her “first home as a financially independent adult,” adding, “By far the hardest step in this journey. Even though I seemed to have accepted my reality, nothing could have prepared me for this day… Though short lived, I really appreciate the life you gave me AMERICA, I LOVE YOU.”

Joshi, a 2024 graduate of Northwestern University with a master’s in Biotechnology, had worked at a biotech startup under the OPT program before being laid off in a company-wide downsizing.

Four months ago, she revealed in a LinkedIn post that her visa clock was “ticking” and she needed urgent employment to remain in the US. Despite an active job hunt, she was unable to secure a role, forcing her departure.

While many social media users expressed sympathy, praising her resilience, others criticised her for flying first class on her way out. Recent posts suggest she may pursue opportunities in Dubai.

The F-1 OPT program allows international students on F-1 visas to work temporarily in their field of study for up to 12 months, with STEM graduates eligible for an extension.

Joshi’s story has highlighted the uncertainty faced by thousands of foreign students navigating the US immigration and job market system.
