A landmine explosion on Saturday claimed the lives of at least eight passengers traveling along the Maiduguri-Damboa highway in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria. The blast occurred near Gidan Kaji, approximately 30 kilometers from Damboa town, when a commercial bus struck an improvised explosive device suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram militants.
Governor Babagana Zulum confirmed that seven other travelers were admitted to the intensive care unit in Maiduguri, while 14 sustained minor injuries. He assured that the state government would cover the medical expenses of those injured and called on security agencies to intensify efforts to secure major roads across the state.
Local vigilante officer Abor Kachallah reported that the incident occurred around 11:45 a.m. Usman Idi, a traveler from Damboa, noted a significant military presence at the scene shortly after the explosion.
