Tlaib’s resolution calls on Congress to recognize Israeli attacks in Gaza as genocide and halt US arms transfers immediately.

Democratic lawmaker Rashida Tlaib introduced a resolution in Congress on Friday seeking to recognize Israel’s assault on Gaza as genocide. Co-sponsored by 21 Democratic lawmakers, Resolution H.RES. 876 urges the US to fulfill its obligations under the Genocide Convention, including halting arms transfers to Israel and prosecuting US-based actors complicit in genocide.

“Impunity only enables more atrocity,” Tlaib said. “As our government continues to send a blank check for war crimes and ethnic cleansing, Palestinian children’s smiles are extinguished by bombs and bullets that are made in the USA.”

Since October 2023, the US has provided $21.7 billion in military aid to Israel, approving over $30 billion in new arms deals. The resolution cites UN findings documenting over 69,185 deaths in Gaza, including 20,000 children, and accuses Israel of deliberate acts intended to destroy Palestinians, in line with the Genocide Convention.
