Lawmakers issue warning to illegal quarry operators over licenses

The House of Reps has warned quarry firms operating illegally or defying summons risk losing their licenses.

The House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals has threatened to recommend the revocation of mining licenses of companies operating illegally or ignoring legislative summons.

Chairman Hon. Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi issued the warning at an investigative hearing into quarry operations nationwide. He ordered Arab Contractors and Omatek to produce documents authorising their activities at the Nature Quarry Site or shut down immediately.

Gbefwi expressed concern over repeated snubs of committee invitations, calling it a “blatant disregard for Nigerian laws.” Oversight visits revealed multiple irregularities, including firms neglecting host communities and flouting development agreements.

“Many companies failed to deliver on their commitments, leaving affected communities in poor conditions,” he said.

The committee also found that while technical staff are based in Nigeria, key decisions are made remotely by executives in countries like China.

While supporting foreign investment, Gbefwi emphasised it must not violate Nigerian laws or harm local communities.

He warned licenses may be revoked if violations persist, calling Arab Contractors’ operations “illegal.”
