Authorities captured a leopard that wandered into a Bandung hotel, prompting panic among guests before being tranquilised and taken for observation.

A leopard was captured on Monday after it wandered into a hotel complex in Bandung, the capital of West Java, Indonesia, triggering panic among guests.

The animal was spotted outside a guest room on the second floor, prompting hotel staff to alert firefighters, who then contacted the local conservation agency. “We used a tranquiliser, and at around 10am the leopard was taken out of the hotel,” said Agus Arianto, head of West Java’s conservation agency.

He added that “currently, the leopard is slowly regaining consciousness. It has started to growl.” Officials are investigating whether the animal is the same leopard that reportedly escaped from a nearby zoo in late August.

The leopard will be taken to a conservation facility for observation. Indonesia has witnessed similar incidents in recent years, including the 2021 escape of two Bengal tigers in West Kalimantan, which resulted in the death of a zookeeper and one of the tigers being shot dead.
