Lesbian, gay, and bisexual organizations from 18 countries have launched a new alliance to focus exclusively on same-sex rights, breaking away from the wider LGBTQ movement. The coalition, called LGB International, was unveiled Saturday with members from Taiwan, Australia, Bulgaria, the United States, and Canada, among others.
Organizers say mainstream LGBTQ groups have abandoned their original mission by prioritizing gender identity issues over same-sex protections. Frederick Schminke, chair of LGB International, said traditional organizations are now “entirely devoted to gender identity ideology,” warning that “same-sex rights are being lost.”
In Canada, LGB Alliance Canada has joined the international effort, criticizing groups like Egale Canada for sidelining gay and lesbian concerns. The group argues that gender activism undermines sex-based protections and pressures same-sex attracted youth toward medical transition.
Bev Jackson, co-founder of the UK’s LGB Alliance, welcomed the global push, saying it offers young gays and lesbians an alternative to pressure that they must be “trans.”
