Disney’s announcement of its seventh theme park resort in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), is raising eyebrows due to the country’s strict anti-LGBTQ laws.

The UAE is one of a dozen nations where homosexual conduct is punishable by death under Sharia law. The announcement has sparked criticism from conservatives, especially given Disney’s history of LGBTQ advocacy. “Disney, which sued Florida’s DeSantis over the ‘don’t say gay’ bill, announced it will build a new theme park in Abu Dhabi, where gay people can be beheaded,” said OutKick founder Clay Travis.

While major LGBTQ groups have remained silent, some Disney fans are concerned about the safety of LGBTQ and Jewish visitors in the UAE. The $10 billion project, funded by Miral, will be located on Yas Island, a hub for international tourism. Disney CEO Bob Iger emphasized that the resort would blend Disney’s iconic characters with the UAE’s culture.
