Over 5,000 Nigerians have been rescued from Libya in 2025, yet many still risk their lives. FG warns: “Libya is a trap, not a route to Europe.”
The Federal Government has warned Nigerians against attempting to migrate illegally through Libya, describing the North African country as a death trap, not an escape route to Europe.
Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, raised concern over increasing cases of human trafficking and detention of Nigerians in Libya.
“This year alone, over 5,000 Nigerians have been brought back from Libya through the efforts of the Refugee Commission and the IOM,” she said.
Dabiri-Erewa decried the high rate of exploitation, revealing that traffickers collect up to N1.5 million from victims, only for them to be stranded.
“Libya is not an escape route; it is a trap,” she warned.
She urged tougher prosecution of traffickers, while revealing that the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) is coordinating discreet rescue efforts due to Libya’s instability and rebel-controlled regions.
