Wirtz joins Liverpool after scoring 57 goals and assisting 65 in 197 games
Liverpool have agreed a club-record deal worth up to £116 million to sign attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, according to widespread reports. The Premier League champions will pay an initial £100 million, with add-ons that could push the total fee beyond Chelsea’s £115 million acquisition of Moises Caicedo.
Reports from Germany suggest the total package may reach €150 million (£127 million). Wirtz, 22, becomes the Reds’ most expensive signing, surpassing Darwin Nunez’s £85 million move in 2022.
Manchester City were also interested but reportedly withdrew due to escalating costs.
Former Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, now Real Madrid manager, previously hailed Wirtz as “one of the best in the world.”
Wirtz was central to Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga title and German Cup double in 2023/24, contributing 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 games.
