Liverpool owners will honour Diogo Jota’s full £14m contract for his widow and children following his tragic death.

Liverpool’s Fenway Sports Group (FSG) will pay the full remainder of Diogo Jota’s contract to his widow and three children following the striker’s death in a car crash, head coach Arne Slot has confirmed.

Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva died in northern Spain on July 3, just 11 days after Jota married childhood sweetheart Rute Cardoso. The Portuguese forward had two years left on his Liverpool deal, worth around £14 million at £140,000 per week.

Slot told TNT Sport: “Owners are mainly criticised, like managers, but the way they’ve handled this situation by paying his wife and his children all the money from the contract is … Maybe people think it’s normal, but it is not in football.”

The tragedy has deeply affected Liverpool fans and players, who paid tributes at Anfield, Jota’s funeral, and during the Ballon d’Or ceremony. His No.20 shirt has been retired, and fans sing his song in the 20th minute of every home game.
