Spanish authorities confirmed that Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother Andre, 26, died early Thursday when their Lamborghini crashed and caught fire in Zamora province, northern Spain.

Emergency services received multiple calls shortly after midnight reporting the car had left the A-52 near Cernadilla and was ablaze. Responders confirmed both men dead at the scene.

Reports suggest the supercar’s tire may have blown out while overtaking, causing it to roll and burst into flames. The crash comes just weeks after Jota married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, with whom he has three children.

The Portuguese Football Federation expressed devastation. President Pedro Proenca said: “Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 internationalizations for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents.”

Liverpool FC and Portugal’s national team paid tribute, describing Jota as a gifted player and beloved teammate. UEFA was asked to hold a minute’s silence before Portugal’s Women’s Euro match against Spain.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves and became a fan favorite for his goal-scoring and work rate.

The crash’s cause remains under investigation.
