Nigeria’s maritime sector hit a green milestone with the arrival of “Kota Oasis,” the first LNG-powered containership to berth in West Africa, docking at APM Terminals Apapa.

APM Terminals Apapa welcomed “Kota Oasis” on Wednesday, marking the first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered containership to berth in West Africa. Owned by Pacific International Lines (PIL), the Singapore-flagged vessel is part of a new class of 8,200 TEU dual-fuel ships aimed at cutting maritime carbon emissions.

Equipped with Win-GD’s X-DF engines featuring Intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling (iCER), the vessel meets IMO Tier III standards, emitting minimal NOx, SOx, and particulates.

Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen praised PIL’s decision, stating the docking aligns with APM’s emissions-reduction goals. “Efficient port operations reduce turnaround time, fuel use, and emissions,” he said.

PIL Nigeria’s Olawunmi Akinyemi called the visit a “major achievement,” reflecting PIL’s net-zero ambitions by 2050. Operations Lead Dhruv Kohli added, “We are committed to deploying the latest shipping technologies in the region.”

Nigerian port officials hailed the milestone, linking it to broader sustainability efforts in maritime logistics.
