French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Europe to reduce its economic and technological dependence on the US and China, warning such ties threaten sovereignty and strategic autonomy.

Speaking to the UK Parliament during a state visit on Tuesday, Macron said, “If we still depend on both China and the US, I think we have a clear view of our future and the future of our children.”

“We want an open world. We want to cooperate, but not to depend,” he added.

Macron criticized Chinese subsidies and overcapacity, as well as the US-led trade war, calling it “an explicit decision not to be compliant anymore with the WTO.”

“Each time we depend, each time we are not able to stand up and decide and agree to disagree, this is the beginning of our problem,” he warned.

He also praised the UK’s support for Ukraine and called for an unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, reaffirming Europe’s backing for a two-state solution in the Middle East.
