President Bola Tinubu is expected to announce a new INEC Chairman this week, as political parties under IPAC push for an independent body to handle future appointments.
President Bola Tinubu is expected to announce a new chairman for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) soon.
The appointment is likely to top discussions at the forthcoming Council of State meeting scheduled for later this week.
Meanwhile, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has proposed the creation of an Independent Appointment Committee (IAC) to handle the selection of the INEC Chairman, National Commissioners, and Secretary.
IPAC National Chairman, Dr Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, made the call during a consultative meeting between political party leaders and the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review in Abuja on Monday.
“Instead, an Independent Appointment Committee (IAC) should be established, composed of representatives from all registered political parties, civil society organisations, the National Judicial Council, and a committee of the National Assembly drawn from both the majority and minority caucuses,” he said.
He said the move would promote transparency and credibility in the appointment process.
