Ahmed Makarfi has resigned as PDP Board of Trustees secretary following the election of a national chairman from the same geopolitical zone, citing adherence to party zoning principles.

Ahmed Makarfi, former governor of Kaduna State, has resigned as secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), following the election of Kabiru Turaki as national chairman, according to a report from THE CABLE.

In a letter addressed to BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara, Makarfi explained that he could not remain in office because both he and Turaki hail from the north-west geopolitical zone. “The principal reason for my resignation then and now was, and is still, my belief that the national chairman of the party and the secretary should not come from the same geopolitical zone,” he said.

Makarfi disclosed that he had attempted to resign two months earlier but was persuaded to remain until after the national convention. He stressed that stepping down now would allow the chairman “full space to do the needful” and prevent any “impression of imbalance” within the party leadership.

The former governor, who served Kaduna from 1999 to 2007, thanked Wabara and fellow BoT members for their cooperation during his tenure. “I truly appreciate the very respectful relationship between us during my period as secretary,” he said, adding his gratitude to all board members for their support.

Makarfi’s resignation takes effect immediately, November 17, 2025, marking a key leadership adjustment in the PDP following its recent national convention.
