The Society for Family Health (SFH) has revealed that malaria kills nine Nigerians every hour, affecting 97% of the population. During a media orientation in Kano on its integrated insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) campaign, SFH’s Social and Behavioural Change Specialist, Sesugh Deborah Oryiman, said the organization plans to distribute 7.7 million treated nets and over 15 million doses of SPAQ to children aged 3–59 months.
“Malaria is the most common preventable public health problem in Nigeria,” Oryiman stated, adding that it causes 30% of child and 11% of maternal deaths yearly.
She noted that Nigeria bears a quarter of the global malaria burden, with one in five global deaths occurring in the country.
Kano State Malaria Elimination Programme Manager, Babangida Gwarzo, said over 27,000 mobilizers will reach more than three million children. He urged caregivers to ensure children receive treatment, especially during the rainy season.
