Federal authorities are investigating whether a migrant accused of threatening former President Donald Trump was framed, sources told ABC News.

Ramon Morales Reyes, 54, was arrested after allegedly mailing a threatening letter and stating he would shoot Trump at a rally. However, law enforcement sources say Reyes’ handwriting did not match the letter, prompting questions about its authenticity.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem praised the arrest, posting, “Thanks to our ICE officers, this illegal alien who threatened to assassinate President Trump is behind bars,” and vowed to “take all measures necessary to ensure the protection of President Trump.” She has not commented on the framing allegations.

Sources revealed Reyes was in conflict with another man, currently jailed for similar threats against Trump, who allegedly sought his deportation to prevent him from testifying.

DHS confirmed Reyes is undocumented and has a criminal history. The Milwaukee Police Department said it is probing “identity theft and victim intimidation.”

“The investigation into the threat is ongoing,” a senior DHS official told ABC News.

The Secret Service referred inquiries to DHS.
