Manchester United were left ruing a late equaliser conceded against Lyon on Thursday night, having been on course to take an aggregate lead back to Old Trafford next week.
Manchester United missed the chance to take an advantage into the second leg after conceding a dramatic late equaliser in a 2-2 draw against Lyon on Thursday night. Joshua Zirkzee’s 88th-minute header looked to have secured a comeback win after Leny Yoro had earlier cancelled out Thiago Almada’s opener. But in the 90th minute, Rayan Cherki capitalised on a rebound to snatch a draw.
United’s Andre Onana endured a tough night, misjudging Almada’s free-kick that led to Lyon’s first goal. “One of the worst,” former United man Nemanja Matic said of Onana pre-game, words that loomed large.
Despite the setback, United remain unbeaten in the Europa League this season, extending their run to 11 games. Ruben Amorim named an unchanged XI for the first time as head coach, with Kobbie Mainoo returning from injury.
