A distressed two-storey building collapsed in Oyingbo, Lagos, trapping several occupants and injuring 15 as rescue operations continue

Several persons were feared trapped after a two-storey building collapsed in the Oyingbo area of Lagos in the early hours of Monday.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incident in a statement, identifying the building as located at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop, Oyingbo.

Adeseye said the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station team was immediately deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call around 12:20 a.m. “It is an ongoing rescue involving an existing two-storey building which has reportedly been marked in distress before collapsing on the occupants,” the statement read.

So far, 15 people — including seven men, four women and four children — have been rescued with varying degrees of injuries and taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, and General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island.

Rescue efforts were still ongoing as of press time.

Building collapses have become a recurring tragedy in Lagos, often linked to poor construction practices, substandard materials, and weak regulatory enforcement.

The latest incident comes barely a month after a similar collapse in Yaba claimed several lives.
