Lionel Messi, after scoring twice in Argentina’s 3–0 win over Venezuela in Buenos Aires, hinted that due to his age he “doesn’t think” he’ll play another World Cup, saying he’ll evaluate his future “day by day” and decide after the MLS season and 2026 preseason.
Lionel Messi delivered a stirring performance as Argentina secured a 3–0 victory over Venezuela in what could prove to be his final home World Cup qualifier.
Messi struck in the 39th and 80th minutes, with Lautaro Martínez also on the scoresheet, though a hat-trick was denied by an offside ruling. “Being able to finish this way here is what I’ve always dreamed of,” said Messi, reflecting on his emotional connection with Argentine fans .
When asked about his future, the 37-year-old expressed cautious optimism but realism. “Same as I said before about the World Cup that I don’t think I’ll play another. Because of my age, the most logical thing is that I won’t make it. But well, we’re almost there so I’m excited and motivated to play it,” he explained .
Messi added that he would take things “day by day,” seeking to “feel good and above all, be honest” with himself. He intends to complete the current MLS season, follow with a 2026 preseason, and then make a decision . Argentina remain atop the CONMEBOL standings with 38 points, already securing qualification, joined by Uruguay, Colombia, Paraguay, Brazil, and Ecuador .
