Google, Microsoft and TikTok have deactivated over 13 million accounts in Nigeria in line with the nation’s Code of Practice for online platforms, according to NITDA.
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has disclosed that global platforms Google, Microsoft and TikTok deactivated more than 13 million accounts in Nigeria in compliance with the Code of Practice for online platforms.
NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications, Hadiza Umar, announced this in Abuja, noting that the 2024 compliance reports captured measures taken to improve online safety.
“The highlight of the overall statistics across all platforms shows that there are 754,629 registered complaints. We recorded 58,909,112 content takedowns and 420,439 removed and re-uploaded pieces of content following appeals by users. There were 13,597,057 closed and deactivated accounts,” she said.
Umar stressed that the compliance reflects progress towards fostering a safe and responsible digital environment, in line with Nigerian laws. She added that sustained collaboration among regulators, industry players and civil society is needed to build trust, enhance digital literacy and strengthen user safety measures in the country’s online ecosystem.
