The Mexican Episcopal Conference has expressed shock over the June 13 massacre of more than 200 Christians in Yelwata, Guma LGA, Benue State, Nigeria. In a statement signed by Bishop Ramón Castro Castro and Bishop Héctor M. Pérez Villarreal, the Church leaders condemned the attack, calling it “inhuman violence” that “cries out to heaven.”

“The Mexican Episcopal Conference expresses its deepest dismay and sorrow over the massacre… where more than two hundred Christian brothers and sisters were brutally murdered while they slept,” the statement read.

The bishops offered prayers for the victims and their families, urging peace and the end of religious or ethnic violence. They encouraged Mexican ecclesial communities to hold Eucharistic celebrations and holy hours in honor of the victims.

“May this time of grace lead us to contemplate with faith and trust the merciful face of Christ… and work tirelessly for reconciliation, forgiveness, and true justice,” they added.
