A single glittery sock once worn by the late pop superstar Michael Jackson during a concert in France in the 1990s sold for more than US $8,000 at an auction on Wednesday, according to a French auctioneer.
A technician discovered the used sock discarded near Jackson’s dressing room after a July 1997 concert in Nîmes, Aurore Illy told AFP .
Jackson sported white athletic socks adorned with rhinestones during his HIStory World Tour in 1997, and the items can be seen in performance clips of his hit “Billie Jean.”
The off‑white sock is now stained, and the rhinestones have yellowed with age . “It really is an exceptional object — even a cult one for Michael Jackson fans,” Illy said.
Initially estimated at €3,000 to €4,000 (US $3,400 to $4,500), it fetched €7,688 (US $8,822) at the Nîmes auction house.
