“It is very important for my kids to feel like they’ve earned what they are getting in the world.”

Former First Lady Michelle Obama has shared her support for daughter Malia’s decision to drop the Obama surname in her professional film work.

In an episode of the “Sibling Revelry” podcast, Michelle said both she and former President Barack Obama “respected the fact that she’s trying to make her way.”

Malia, 25, used her middle name “Ann” for the credits of her short film The Heart, which was featured at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

“They’re very sensitive to that — they want to be their own people,” Michelle said. “It is very important for my kids to feel like they’ve earned what they are getting in the world.”

Michelle noted that as adults, Malia and Sasha now better understand their parents’ choices. “They understand us as full human beings now,” she said.

Barack Obama echoed this sentiment in 2024, telling Ryan Clark that Malia wanted her film “watched… not in any way have that association [with the Obama last name].”
