Michelle Obama: Why I hate being called ‘Mrs. Obama’

“We cannot have a real conversation if you’re saying, ‘Mrs. Obama,’ that’s too many syllables,” Michelle said with a laugh.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama has expressed her dislike for being called “Mrs. Obama,” saying it creates distance in conversations and makes her seem unapproachable.

Appearing on the Las Culturistas podcast with her brother Craig Robinson, Michelle told hosts Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang that she prefers to be addressed by her first name.

“We cannot have a real conversation if you’re saying, ‘Mrs. Obama,’ that’s too many syllables,” Michelle said with a laugh, adding, “I am not that position. I am Michelle.”

The comments come amid continued rumors about the state of her 32-year marriage to former President Barack Obama — speculation she previously dismissed on The Diary of a CEO podcast. “If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it,” she said.

Michelle acknowledged that children may call her “Mrs.” but emphasized, “I’m always trying to break down that wall.”
