We should, however, ask ourselves how much of the conventional sources of energy we have exploited.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has advised the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) against its plan to establish four nuclear power plants generating 1,200 megawatts each. Adelabu made the remarks during a meeting with the acting chairman of NAEC, Anthony Ekedewa, in Abuja.

Ekedewa briefed the minister on the commission’s activities, stating, “We want to work and partner with you in the area of power generation… We have carried out the feasibility studies.”

In response, Adelabu acknowledged the potential of nuclear energy but questioned the nation’s current readiness. “We should ask ourselves how much of the conventional sources of energy we have exploited,” he said.

While expressing support for modular nuclear reactors, the minister emphasised the importance of collaboration and proposed a stakeholder workshop. “Nuclear energy is the future of power generation. This meeting is the right step in the right direction,” he added.
