The suspected gunman who killed Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, also fatally shot their beloved golden retriever, Gilbert, a fellow lawmaker has revealed.

Erin Koegel, a member of the Minnesota House, said Hortman’s children had to “put down [Gilbert] after learning their parents had been murdered.” The tragic attack occurred early Saturday at the couple’s Brooklyn Park home.

Suspect Vance Luther Boelter, 57, allegedly also wounded state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife before fleeing. He was captured Sunday morning after a 43-hour manhunt, reportedly the largest in Minnesota history. Police say Boelter, a former appointee of Gov. Tim Walz, was arrested without incident in a rural field.
