MINNEAPOLIS — Vance Boetler, the suspect in the June 14 political shooting spree that killed Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, and wounded Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, claimed in a letter to the FBI that Governor Tim Walz ordered him to assassinate Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

According to The Minnesota Star Tribune, Boetler, 57, made the claim in a rambling 1.5-page handwritten note, described by sources as “mostly incoherent.”

Boetler, wearing a police uniform and latex mask, left behind a manifesto listing 70 politicians — including Walz — as targets. He was captured June 15 in a wooded area after a massive manhunt.

“Boetler is a very dangerous man and I am deeply grateful that law enforcement got him behind bars,” Klobuchar said.

Walz’s office said he was “grateful to prosecutors who will ensure justice is swiftly served.”

Boetler faces federal murder and stalking charges, and could face the death penalty if convicted. Investigators continue examining his motives and writings.
