A mother and her five children died when their house collapsed during a heavy downpour in Dankama village, Kaita Local Government Area of Katsina State. The incident occurred around 2:00 am on Monday at the residence of Muhammad Sani Garba.
The victims, all asleep at the time, were identified as Mariya Sani, 45, and her children: Mujahid, 20; Zahariya, 18; Hauwa, 15; Amira; and Nura, 5. Four others sustained injuries and were hospitalized.
Muhammad Sani, the bereaved father, said he was away when the tragedy occurred. “This happened to about ten people, but sadly six didn’t make it. Right now, four are in the hospital receiving treatment,” he told reporters.
Grief has overwhelmed the Dankama community, with sympathizers visiting the family home in large numbers. Despite the loss, Sani said, “I see this as a will of Allah’s. May He grant them eternal rest.”
State emergency officials confirmed the incident and have assessed the affected site.
