Eyewitnesses reported a fresh assault by gunmen in the early hours of Monday, prompting local women to take to the streets in protest.

Tension surged again in the Yelwata community in Guma, Benue State after gunmen reportedly attacked residents in the early hours of Monday. The renewed violence follows a brutal massacre in June. Eyewitnesses say the attack triggered a protest by local women, who demanded that soldiers stationed nearby be withdrawn to their barracks.

“The aggrieved residents also called for immediate transportation to Makurdi, insisting they no longer feel safe in the community,” according to the report. “They should take us to Makurdi because the government cannot protect us,” one protester said.

This latest incident comes barely two months after gunmen, believed to be herders, stormed Yelwata on June 13 and killed between 200 people, including many internally displaced persons, with numerous victims burned alive in a horrific night of violence.
