Lagos Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has raised alarm over a sharp increase in his electricity bill, which surged from N2.7 million in March to N29 million in April.
Speaking at a roundtable with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in Victoria Island on Monday, Hamzat said efforts to use a prepaid meter were frustrated by the electricity distribution company.
“I actually procured a meter… but to convert it is wahala,” he said, expressing concern over “crazy bills” and the burden on residents.
Hamzat, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the event, shared another case where a Surulere resident received a N2.8 million bill, exceeding his N2 million annual rent. “How can the bill be more than the man’s rent for a year?” he asked.
The meeting preceded the signing of an MoU to electrify Lagos rural communities. Biodun Ogunleye, energy commissioner, hailed the REA partnership as a move to bring “constant and stable supply of electricity” to underserved areas.
