GMOs are not bad for us, depending on what type of foods they are and whether the safety considerations have been taken
The Director‑General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, asserted that genetically modified foods (GMOs) are not inherently harmful to human health, as long as they meet established safety standards. She delivered the remarks during an interview on Channels Television amid intensifying nationwide debates over GMO consumption and regulation .
“GMOs are genetically modified foods when it comes to food, and they are not bad for us,” Adeyeye said. “They’re not bad for us, depending on what type of foods they are and whether the safety considerations have been taken.”
She explained that the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) is responsible for ensuring the safety of GMO products, while NAFDAC collaborates under a formal Memorandum of Understanding to certify food quality, safety, and efficacy before any approval .
Describing herself as a “food freak,” Adeyeye emphasised the importance of checking labels for GMO indications, reassuring Nigerians that only approved products subjected to strict safety evaluations reach the market .
