Nations will gather in Nice, France from June 9 to 13 for the third U.N. Ocean Conference to address what the UN calls a global ocean emergency.

Delegates will discuss rising ocean temperatures, plastic pollution, and overfishing. Secretary-General Li Junhua said the event should be “the pivotal opportunity” to drive global action.

Over 60 world leaders, 4,000 officials, and 6,000 civil society members are expected. Costa Rica’s UN envoy Maritza Chan Valverde emphasized urgency, saying, “Zero rhetoric. Maximum results.” She expects $100 billion in funding pledges.

France aims to push ratification of a 2023 high seas treaty. Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont said the goals include protecting 30% of oceans and reducing maritime carbon emissions.

The final declaration highlights the role of healthy oceans in global food security and biodiversity but omits deep-sea mining due to lack of consensus, Li said.
