Germany has launched a large-scale NATO military exercise in the Baltic Sea, moving troops and equipment to Lithuania as tensions with Russia remain high.

Germany is leading a major NATO exercise in the Baltic Sea aimed at reinforcing the alliance’s eastern flank amid ongoing tensions with Russia.

The drill, codenamed Quadriga 2025, involves more than 8,000 troops from 14 countries, including the U.S., U.K., France and Canada. German officers, Baltic ambassadors, and NATO officials gathered Thursday in Rostock to observe a ferry loaded with military vehicles depart for Klaipeda, Lithuania, under naval and aerial escort.

The German military said the exercise features 40 ships, 20 aircraft and 1,800 road vehicles. Demonstrations included drone interceptions and Eurofighter jet flyovers.

Gen. Carsten Breuer, chief of staff of the Bundeswehr, said “we are seeing close up today what it means in concrete terms when Germany takes international responsibility” and serves as a “reliable supply hub for NATO.”

Breuer added, “we want deterrence, we don’t want escalation,” cautioning that Russia’s upcoming Zapad drills with Belarus could heighten insecurity.
