Nepal’s Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli resigned on Tuesday after violent protests against a social media ban and corruption claims left 19 people dead.

Nepalese Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli resigned on Tuesday following violent protests over a controversial social media ban and allegations of corruption. His resignation came hours after rioters torched homes of top political leaders, including former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and Maoist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

The protests escalated after security forces killed 19 demonstrators during clashes on Monday. “They killed so many youths yesterday who had so much to look forward to,” protester Durganah Dahal said.

A curfew has been imposed in Kathmandu and schools remain closed as security forces battle to restore order.

The government introduced the ban as part of a plan to regulate online platforms, requiring all networks to register locally. Meta and Google did not comply, triggering widespread anger. TikTok and Viber remain operational after registration.

Oli’s resignation follows that of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, who quit after the fatal shootings.
