Netanyahu denounced Western nations’ recognition of Palestinian statehood at the U.N., calling it a reward for terrorism as Israel continues its war in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday blasted Western countries for recognizing a Palestinian state, accusing them of encouraging terrorism and isolating Israel further on the global stage.
Speaking at the U.N. General Assembly, Netanyahu said, “This week, the leaders of France, Britain, Australia, Canada and other countries unconditionally recognized a Palestinian state … You know what message the leaders who recognize the Palestinian state this week sent to the Palestinians? It’s a very clear message: murdering Jews pays off.” He called the move a “mark of shame.”
The Israeli leader’s speech came as frustration mounts worldwide over Israel’s nearly two-year war in Gaza. According to Gaza health officials, more than 65,000 Palestinians have been killed since Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack that left about 1,200 Israelis dead. Netanyahu vowed to continue the war until Hamas is dismantled and promised hostages in Gaza, “We’ve not forgotten you — not even for a second.”
His appearance sparked a walkout by scores of delegates while pro-Palestinian protesters rallied in New York. Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas hailed growing recognition of Palestinian statehood and urged the disarming of Hamas.
