Newly elected Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, previously shared numerous criticisms of Donald Trump’s policies on social media.

Using his verified account @drprevost, the Chicago-born pontiff retweeted commentary opposing Trump’s immigration stance and refugee bans. In one 2017 post, Jesuit priest James Martin wrote, “We’re banning all Syrian refugees?… What an immoral nation we are becoming. Jesus weeps.”

He also reposted criticism of Trump’s vice president for ranking love by nationality, and supported calls for U.S. gun control.

The Vatican chose Prevost in a surprise decision during a two-day conclave. President Trump congratulated him, calling it a “Great Honor for our Country.” In his first blessing, Leo XIV emphasized inclusion. His papal name appears to nod to Leo XIII, known for championing workers’ rights.
