New US visa rules not intended to punish Nigerians, says envoy

The United States has clarified that its recent visa policy changes for Nigerians are not punitive but aimed at improving security and service delivery.

The US embassy recently reduced the validity period and entry allowance for most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to Nigerians.

Speaking on Friday in Abuja alongside Mohammed Idris, minister of information, US Ambassador Richard Mills said the measures follow a global review of visa operations. “Let me be clear, the United States values its very strong relationship with Nigeria,” he said, urging compliance with visa regulations.

Mills noted that more rigorous background checks, including access to Nigerian criminal records, are now required. “If you overstay, it can result in deportation and a lifetime ban,” he warned.

Idris dismissed claims of discrimination, stressing continued partnership with the US. “What he has told me is that this is in no way punitive. It’s just to enhance service delivery between the two countries,” the minister said.
