New York Attorney General Letitia James has been indicted on a mortgage fraud charge in a politically charged Justice Department case linked to President Trump.

A federal grand jury has indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James on a mortgage fraud charge, in what critics describe as the Trump administration’s latest use of the Justice Department against the president’s perceived political opponents.

The indictment, filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, followed a mortgage fraud investigation, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke anonymously. James’ office had no immediate comment on Thursday.

The case comes two weeks after former FBI Director James Comey was charged with lying to Congress, reflecting what observers call an “unconventional” use of prosecutorial power. Sources said veteran prosecutor Erik Siebert was removed after resisting pressure to indict and replaced by Lindsey Halligan, a former Trump lawyer.

Trump has long accused James of misconduct, saying she’s “guilty as hell,” while James insists she made an honest filing error. Her lawyer called the case “a bogus vendetta.”
