The New York Post has urged former U.S. President Donald Trump to take action against Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians, a claim the Tinubu administration strongly denies.

The New York Post has called on former U.S. President Donald Trump to take action against the Nigerian government over alleged attacks on Christians by militant Fulani herdsmen in the nation’s Middle Belt.

In an editorial, the newspaper accused Nigerian security forces of standing by “as militant Fulani Muslim herdsmen assault their Christian neighbors.” It urged Trump to “call out the deadly persecution of Nigerian Christians,” adding that “Team Trump should act on its own,” even as Senator Ted Cruz pushes for sanctions on Nigerian officials accused of enabling religious violence.

Citing data from Christian groups, the publication claimed that since 2009, over 50,000 Christians have been killed, 18,000 churches destroyed, and five million people displaced due to religious attacks.

“It’s not Washington’s job to right all the world’s wrongs, but Uncle Sam can at least condemn these ongoing atrocities,” the editorial said.

Reacting, President Bola Tinubu rejected the allegations, insisting that “no faith is under siege” in Nigeria. “Our churches, mosques, and traditional shrines stand side by side—not as rivals, but as symbols of the unity that binds us,” he said, vowing that “Nigeria will not accept lectures from those who seek to profit from our divisions.”
